Project planning is an essential part of implementing new
technology or changes to existing systems. Without it project will
inevitably run over time and go over budget.
Key Points
- Step 1 - Break the project
into phases
The phases should represent a key stage and for each one ascertain the
activities to be considered essential for the success of the project.
- Step 2 - Break the activities
into tasks
These tasks can then be assigned t members of the project team. We then
estimate the effort required to complete each task, remembering to build in
contingency time.
- Step 3 - Schedule the project
We can get ideas for project timings and these can be plotted on a project
planner to provide a table such as a Gantt chart to identify times when
resources could be reallocated due to inactivity.
- There are many methodologies for project planning such
as PRINCEII, DSDM, SSADM or Use Case amongst others and as a consultant we can
advise you on the best method for your project.
